Where Adults Learn to Play Music
800 Point Rd Winnipeg Manitoba R3T 3L8 admin@wpgnewhorizonsband.com
Who We Are
The goal of New Horizons groups is to create an entry point to group music-making for adult beginners and a comfortable re-entry point for adults who played music in school and would like to resume.
Winnipeg New Horizons Band is the only New Horizons Band in western Canada – and Winnipeg’s only adult learning band. It has been teaching adults to play since 2004. Many of our members started with little or no previous musical experience. The band is an opportunity to learn to play music in a group of like- minded, fun-loving individuals.
We practice on Saturday mornings at the Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., Winnipeg, MB.
Come join us to play or listen to a practice.
There are Bands for any skill level:
Beginner: Learn your instrument or learn to read music in a comfortable and supportive environment. As you increase your knowledge and skill you can move up to the transition group to fine-tune!
Junior: At the junior level you can continue to improve your music reading skills while playing your chosen instrument in a nonjudgmental learning environment! When you feel ready you can join the intermediate group.
Intermediate: At the intermediate level you will continue to improve your skills while learning new arrangements. Throughout the season these are often performed for family, fundraising events and other occasions.
As a Member you also may be interested in joining the Jazz Band or the Sax Ensemble.

"I confess that in the late 1980s, when I was just thinking about starting a music program for retired adults, I thought, Well, we would want to give concerts, but probably no one would come. I was so wrong. You will find that New Horizons bands and orchestras become important parts of their communities, performing in many different settings and for large audiences. The children and grandchildren of the New Horizons musicians often travel long distances to attend New Horizons concerts."
